Many of you may have heard of the tectonic plates, but are not quite sure exactly what they are. Tectonic plates are pieces of the Earth’s upper crust or basically the outermost layer. Researching them, you find a lot of scientific jargon that is very technical, but they are very important to the world, and especially Iceland. Iceland sits right in the middle of two plates-the North American and the Eurasian plate. This is the only place in the world where you can actually see the meeting of these two particular plates, since typically they are hundreds of feet below the ocean surface. Because of the geographical location of Iceland on the two plates, there are hundreds of active volcanos throughout the country and they have multiple earthquakes a day! Thankfully, the earthquakes are so subtle that people do not even notice them and no harm is caused to the surrounding structures. Each year, the plates are separating by 2 centimeters, which only increases the chances for volcanic activity in Iceland. Since the plates are splitting a part, this allows visitors to snorkel or dive in the fissure that is produced from the movement! Of course, I added this to my must-do list while in Iceland!

After finding a tour that was small enough to get the real experience, we were booked to go for a noon time slot. The water is going to be freezing regardless what time you snorkel or dive because it is from the glacier coming in a a whopping 2 degrees celsius (around 36 degrees Fahrenheit)! Fun fact: the water takes 30 years to melt from the glacier and flow through volcanic rock to reach the very entry point where you enter the water. Also, this makes the visibility incredibly clear, at 200 meters. The great thing about this particular tour is having the option of a wet or dry suit to keep you warm. I chose the dry suit because you remain mostly dry, except your hair and hands, and you can wear a thin layer of clothing underneath! The guide also takes GoPro pictures for you the entire time, so there is no need to worry about trying to capture the moment and take it all in, while trying to swim, although you have the option to rent your own GoPro if you so choose. The guides were very knowledgeable and made sure to get pictures at every angle-to be honest, there are no bad angles when you are swimming between the tectonic plates! The water is freezing, but the colors reflecting off the earth makes you forget about your hands being near hypothermia (dramatization). You are able to float through this crystal clear water and think about how this is what makes up our planet Earth, how cool! Unfortunately, there is little wildlife since it is so cold, but that did not make this a bad experience at all, in fact you could really take in what you were seeing right before your eyes-incredible is an understatement! After swimming for 30-45 minutes, we changed back into our clothing and had hot chocolate or coffee to help warm the soul. Luis from Viking Adventures gets a two thumbs up for checking this experience off my list! Take the chance to swim between the Earth’s crust as Iceland is one of the only places in the world you can actually see them-you will not regret it! https://adventurevikings.is/tours/snorkeling/
