Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and is known as the “City of a Hundred Spires.” The Old Town with its medieval clock tower is one of the best-preserved squares in all of Europe and serves as the city’s living room by day and night. We only had several days there before heading to Vienna. Here is what we recommend:

Visit Old Town’s Astronomical Clock on the Hour

This medieval clock “performs” every hour on the hour from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Watch the Parade of the Apostles.

Do a Guided Walk and Cruise the Vltava

One of the best things I like doing when I arrive in a city is taking a walking tour with a guide to get the lay of the land. This tour provides the history of Prague and also discusses famous landmarks and architecture throughout the centuries. It ends with a river cruise.

Prague Beer History and Tasting

This tour is informative because the guide teaches about the history of brewing in Prague and elsewhere. Then, you are given samples to taste as each one is described in detail.

WWII Walking Tour

Learn about German-occupied Prague and Operation Anthropoid. See exactly where the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the mastermind behind the Final Solution at Wannsee, took place and what ensued afterward. Make sure to do this tour before going to Terezin and Lidice.

Prague Castle

This perfectly preserved castle is a highlight and jewel in the city’s crown. You can do the walk yourself, but a guided tour is invaluable when you want to learn the history and gain easy access to the castle. The views from the top are worth it.

Tour Terezin and Lidice

Truth be told, this is why I wanted to come to Prague. I wanted to tour Terezin, a Nazi concentration camp during WW2, and learn all about it. This tour includes Lidice which is really important if you also do the WWII Walking Tour. What occurred at Lidice is a direct result of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich and the Nazis’ method of retribution. Read my post on Terezin here.
