Did you know that the Victoria Falls are considered one of the largest waterfalls in the world due to its combined height and width of falling water? The Victoria Falls are known for the largest sheets of falling water-imagine twice the height and width of North America’s Niagara Falls. When you see something in nature this grand, it takes your breath away and makes you realize the natural beauty in the world, then you snap all the pictures you can so you don’t forget this moment. The Victoria Falls are on the Zambezi River in South Africa between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Kelly and I stayed in Zimbabwe and took a day sightseeing trip to see this incredible waterfall that many people will never get the chance to witness. First of all, I highly recommend wearing a rain jacket because the spray off the waterfall is unpredictable and can be intense-think walking through a sprinkler! Also, wear sunscreen since the sun reflecting off the water can be intense, but insanely beautiful, and if you are lucky, a spectacular rainbow will appear. Our tour led us all along the waterfall on the Zimbabwe side, from the First Gorge to the Second Gorge, ending at the Boiling pot, which is a large carved out pool of water. The Basalt plateau of the falls was formed in the Jurassic era, which was over 200 million years ago! It’s rare to see something unchanged from that long ago, which makes it that much more special! If you’re brave enough, you can swim in the “Devil’s Pool”, which is an area right at the edge of the cliff before the water cascades over into the Zambezi river, but has little current due to the rock barrier that forms an eddy for people to be adventurous. One other activity for those that have no fear is to bungee jump off the bridge that connects Zimbabwe and Zambia-we held our breath watching people do the unimaginable. Definitely a sight to watch, but not for the faint at heart! Do not skip this chance to see nature’s pure beauty and learn about the history of the falls, while taking in the fresh sprays from the water! It’s a memory Kelly and I cannot forget with the endless amount of laughter we encountered during the tour!
