Are you dreaming of a heaping bowl of Spaghetti alla Carbonara or Cacio e Pepe, a tour of the Colosseum, or visiting the Sistine Chapel? There are so many delights to be found in and around Rome, the city whose profound contributions to western society are witnessed in virtually every aspect of our culture.

If you want to go to Italy, stay in one place the entire time, eat delicious food, and be amazed at centuries-old sights, all roads lead to Rome!

What to do in Rome for a Week…

Visit the Colosseum, the Forum, and Palatine Hill

Calling all history buffs! Behold some of the most incredible sights not only in Rome but anywhere on the planet. The incredulous relics of the Roman Empire still stand and awe visitors, including us. Every time we land in Rome, it is the first place we want to revisit for its sheer magnificence. If it is your first time, you should take a tour where you can learn all about the history. This is a great option from Viator, or add the underground tour to learn about the gladiators’ lives. If you love the movie Gladiator, my absolute favorite film of all time, this tour is for you.

Tour the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica

Even if you aren’t Catholic, this tour will amaze you. The architecture and art that the Church has amassed are absolutely beyond the scope of reason. You must see it for yourself and should purchase tickets in advance. We purchased this small-group guided tour in order to understand what we were witnessing, and it was so impressive.

Throw a Coin into the Trevi Fountain

One of the most famous fountains in the world is worth a coin toss and a selfie. Plus, it’s free!  According to legend, if you toss the coin over your left shoulder using your right hand, you will return to Rome.

Have a Drink or Meal on Piazza Navona and Campo di Fiori

Two of the most famous squares in Rome are perfect destinations for an apperitivo or a meal. Take in the beauty.

Visit the Pantheon

The world’s oldest building still in use today is worth a glance or a tour. You can visit the Pantheon’s website for a guided tour in English. We simply read about it on our own and went to admire it.

Go to Giolitti

My Italian instructor grew up in Rome and insisted that I eat gelato and pastries from Giolitti. He wasn’t wrong!

Photo Ops at Piazza del Popolo

One of the most popular squares in Rome, the “People’s Square” affords stunning views over the city.

See the Spanish Steps and stroll Via Condotti

Need a little Gucci in your life or simply want to commune with fellow tourists? Take a walk down the famous Via Condotti lined with designer boutiques and end at the Spanish Steps.

Day trip to Pompeii and Naples

This is a long day trip from Rome but is manageable and so fun if you don’t have a chance to also stay on the Amalfi Coast. Linnie and I have done both and highly recommend this day trip from Rome.

Go to the Amalfi Coast and Positano

This is also an option from Rome to add to Pompeii. The Amalfi Coast is spectacular. If you have more time and can stay there for just a few days, read this post. If not, do this day trip.

Day trip to Orvieto

Perched atop a cliff, this town with Etruscan roots is worth an easy day trip from Rome simply for its history and shopping. We purchased pottery and linens and had a fabulous lunch. If you want to get a guided tour of the underground tunnels and caves, check out this one.

Castel Sant’ Angelo

An absolute must-see for history buffs, Hadrian’s Mausoleum has been used as a fortress and prison. This tour is truly remarkable.

Eat Everything You Can- no, really!

Rome, just like everywhere else in Italy, is a place to enjoy the quality of ingredients and the art of preparing food. Take it in and appreciate the commitment.
